Being Served

August 8th:

Today I got pedicures with my mom and after we left she commented on how sometimes being served by others makes her feel uncomfortable.

I understand her sentiment. Making someone touch my feet and glam up my toenails, even if they're being paid to do it, seems a little degrading.. Same thing with wait-staff, maid-service, and, like, bellhops. For some reason, when interacting with people employed to serve me, I feel uncomfortable. Perhaps it is because I feel inclined to feel superior even though I know I am not. I like the luxury of having my nails painted and my hotel room cleaned mid-stay, but really, I could very well live without those perks. I understand that there are thousands if not millions of jobs created out of the idea that others like to be served, so I'm not like, anti those jobs, but I wanna point something out.

When was the last time you looked your waiter in the eye and thanked them instead of just leaving a measly tip on the table? Do you remember your hair dresser's name? Do you think of the people serving you as PEOPLE, or merely things that make your life a LITTLE bit easier and more comfy?

I encourage you to pay more attention to the person taking your order or painting your nails. Think of how they probably have that job to pay for their education or family. They aren't lower than you in any way.

Keep it classy - don't be haughty.
