July 14th:
So, if you've ever been to Marianne's Ice Cream in Santa Cruz, you may remember that the wallpaper in the indoor seating area has a pattern of cows on it. They're little dancing cows with different colored baseball caps on:

Well, last summer I went to Marianne's with a bunch of friends after a day at the beach and someone (I believe it was T) had us all going that the wallpaper was scratch and sniff and that each cow had a different scent according to what color his hat was. Well, I scratched and sniffed (as did MANY others), but to no avail.
Of course, when I went there with my mom and friends today, I just HAD to see if my mom would fall for it. When I had her alone at the table (A and R were getting their ice cream), I told her that the wallpaper was really cool and that it was scratch and sniff. She didn't look convince exactly, but didn't look totally UNCONVINCED either, so I decided to continue with the ruse, knowing that A and R both would know what I was up to. Well, apparently A thought I was trying to trick her again and almost blew my cover, but luckily R came to the rescue and provided the back story and the different scents. After we were done consuming our ice cream, my mom got up to get water and I prodded her to scratch and sniff. Still wary, she bent to scratch, then looked at us all holding in our laughter at the table in the mirror on the wall, and for SOME Godforsaken reason she still decided to sniff it regardless of our snickers.
The moment she figured out she had been duped she launched a tickle attack on me and I spilled water all over one of the chairs before escaping outside.
I don't think I will EVER forget her face when she realized we were all lying... PRICELESS.
Has this ever happened to you? Either with the Marianne's Scratch and Sniff Cows, or something else? Were you the duper or the duped? Try this on your friends, it really pays off! Keep it classy, ice cream lovers!
(my cone: "fresh banana" on top and "10-20" on bottom"... I love Marianne's...)
